The Goals and Philosophy of Obedience Training

We believe that good dog training, in many ways, resembles good parenting. What that means is lots of supervision, a clear idea of the goal, a loving but firm demeanor and dedication. Like parenting, dog training is goal oriented.

The goal of obedience training is self explanatory. Literally, obedience training means teaching dogs that they must obey.

It amazes me how many dog trainers miss the boat on this one. They teach dogs how to sit or how to come and leave it at that. They totally skip the part where the dog learns that commands are mandatory.

In the same way that an obedient child knows that he must listen to his mother, an obedient dog knows that he must listen to his owner. That fundamental understanding is what real obedience training is all about.

It is through that understanding that the dog becomes trustworthy and reliable in spite of distractions. It’s also through that understanding that the dog is transformed from a pet to a true companion.
